The African Contemporary Photography Auction
The Auction Room is delighted to announce the inaugural auction of African Contemporary Photography, in collaboration with the leading men’s bespoke tailor, Ozwald Boateng. This is the first time that The Auction Room and Ozwald Boateng have collaborated, and are working together based on the synergy between the two brands in the context of this auction.
The auction will open for bidding on Monday 28th April, when the online catalogue will be available to view at www.theauctionroom.com, and final bidding will take place in the LIVE online room on Wednesday 28th May 2014, starting at 7pm UK time. From 14th to 28th May 2014, all of the works in the auction will be projected within The Gallery in Ozwald Boateng’s flagship store on Savile Row, where clients will also be able to execute their bids online on lots of interest.
The display of these cutting-edge and vibrant works from Africa and its Diaspora, within the context Ozwald Boateng’s striking fashion space designed by the famous architect David Adjaye, will serve to highlight the strong links between fashion, art and identity within African Culture today: a triumvirate that lies at the very heart of this exciting collaboration.
According to Ozwald Boateng, OBE: “Africa is moving into a new creative era. I think it’s very important for me as an individual and as a brand to support talent emerging from the continent. Art and fashion have a natural synergy and the gallery space in my Savile Row store will be the perfect home for the inaugural auction of African Contemporary Photography.”
The sale will feature works from established names such as Malik Sidibe, J.D. Okhai Ojeikere, Uche James-Iroha and Gideon Mendel, as well as an exciting range of young and emerging photographers who are fresh to market. Estimates will range from £500 to £10,000, offering both seasoned and new buyers an excellent opportunity to establish serious collections in this increasingly dynamic area of the art market.
This auction, curated by the renowned African art Specialist, Ed Cross, has launched as a result of the booming interest in the African art market, with particular excitement rising around the talent that is rapidly emerging from contemporary African photographers. Last year saw a number of important events that have helped to raise the profile of African art, which has been long overdue, including The Auction Room’s first African Art Auction, 1:54 – the first African Art fair in London and the two solo exhibitions at The Tate Modern featuring the work of African artists, Meschac Gaba and Ibrahim El-Salahi. Malik Sidibe’s work too has achieved iconic status in the last few years – and awareness of the unique genre of African studio photography become widely known and loved by the general public as well as museums and collectors. We now have a new generation of very talented and committed photographers creating work that is aesthetically powerful, innovative and rich in social and political content.
Reception is strictly by invitation only – for information on obtaining invitations please contact Ellie Wells <firstname.lastname@example.org>.
