Stevenson Presents: Works on Paper

by NEWS
From 11 December 2021 – 5 February 2022, Stevenson is pleased to present Works on Paper, a group exhibition on the latent potential of this versatile material.
Peter Clarke, who contributes the earliest work on view as well as a later collage, has observed that ‘it is difficult to imagine living a full, absolutely satisfactory life without paper’. In Papermaker, from his Fanfare series, Clarke quotes third-century scholar Fu Hsien as part of his visual elegy:
Lovely and precious is this material
Luxury but at a small price; matter immaculate and pure in its nature.
Embodied in beauty and elegance incarnate,
truly it pleases men of letters.
Dating from 1951 to 2021, the selected works range from studies of unmade sculpture to notations of movement and explorations of light, reflecting the imaginative scope of paper.
Participating artists include Cian-Yu Bai, Walter Battiss, Zander Blom, Wim Botha, Breyten Breytenbach, Peter Clarke, Rahima Gambo, Ian Grose, Gabrielle Guy, Dada Khanyisa, Moshekwa Langa, Ernest Mancoba, Neo Matloga, Zhang Meng, Simphiwe Ndzube, Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi, Fadekemi Ogunsanya, Frida Orupabo, Deborah Poynton, Robin Rhode, Viviane Sassen, Penny Siopis, Barthélémy Toguo and Portia Zvavahera.
