Established by Eclipse Live Africa in 2014, the Gidi Culture Festival (Gidi Fest) is a music and arts event that holds annually in Lagos. It is said to have been created in response to the demand for affordable, accessible and live entertainment by the local youth culture. With the main goal of encouraging the development of African talent, as well as the promotion of artistes within the continent into global markets, the Gidi Culture Festival has created an avenue for DJs, musical acts, local vendors, artisans and live bands to showcase their musical and artistic talents. Its inaugural event in 2014 showcased such well-known names as Phyno, Naeto C, Ice Prince, Patoranking, Chidinma, Teezee, Yung L and Falz.

The third edition of Gidi Fest holding this year, features a line-up of music artistes from countries across Africa including Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Congo, as well as the United Kingdom. Most urban youth in and out of Lagos are eagerly looking forward to the festival, because of the inclusion of the highly popular, Kenya-based Afro-pop band, Sauti Sol in this year’s line-up.

A former acappella group, the band was formed by vocalists Bien-Aime Baraza, Willis Chimano, Savara Mudigi and Polycarp Otieno in 2005. Since the debut of their first studio album in 2008, Sauti Sol have gone on to win critical acclaim with several awards. The band has also topped the Kenyan charts, and in 2011 their concert performance in Kenya, with South African acappella group Ladysmith Black Mambazo garnered much local and international attention.

Sauti Sol continues to gain global renown through successful tours in Africa and Europe, as well as many television appearances. On November 21, 2015, the group made their third studio album, titled Live and Die in Africa available to their fans globally for free download. Although the time frame was for just 48 hours, 400,000 downloads were made.

Sauti Sol will perform for its Lagos audience at GidiFest 2017, scheduled to hold during the Easter weekend.
