Recent Works by Abderrahim Yamou
Yamou has made nature the matrix of his works. The artist cultivates plants in the material of his paintings as if to transform the work into a place of life. His recent works show a notable evolution with his earlier works. Here, he brings a new proof of its overwhelming capacity for renewal. No series resembles the other, even if the base that unifies the world of representation of the painter remains the vegetal cover.
According to art critic Marie Moignard, “Yamou always advances on this fine border between the abstract and the figuration. The artist draws inspiration from floral, mineral, earth and water to culminate in poetic and mysterious landscapes. His works offer vertiginous zooms that direct our gaze to unsuspected details. They also draw new paths of meaning. Its branches anchor it as much as they draw paths to borrow. They unfold in interlacing on majestic grand formats, forests of the imaginary.” Sometimes leafy, sometimes naked, the plants give a tranquil force to the paintings of Yamou and evolve as in weightlessness in its pictorial universe.
Yamou mixes several materials (acrylic, watercolour, oil, walnut nut) and techniques (sagging, stamping), thus enriching his work with spectacular results and accidents which he calls his wishes.
Abderrahim Yamou was born in 1959 in Casablanca. After obtaining a DEA in sociology at the Sorbonne Paris IV, he exhibited in 1990 at the Etienne Dinet gallery in Paris. His works can be found in several prestigious collections in Morocco and abroad. He lives and works between Paris and Tahannaout.
Recent Works by Abderrahim Yamou will be on display at Galerie d’art L’Atelier 21 untill November 4, 2017.
