RAPUNZEL, RAPUNZEL, LET DOWN YOUR HAIR
They say the crown of a woman’s beauty is her hair. For many of us, this equates to length. The longer the hair, the better. We all want the long flowing locks that we can flip and brush away with the flick of our wrist.
Many of us grew up watching cartoons that had girls with long hair. In many respects long hair meant beauty. As a child, I recall pretending to be a princess whilst hanging a cloth on my head.
But we were blessed with kinky, coarse hair, which, unless you are blessed with the genes of the Urban Bush Babes, isn’t very long. There is no flicking and when the wind blows, the hair refuses to budge. Stubborn hair for a stubborn people, hey?
However, a lot of us are beginning to appreciate that short hair can be beautiful too. Short hair is great for showing off those features that you are proud of – your glorious doll-like or slanted eyes, your full lips and slender jaw. When people are not distracted by the overshadowing of your hair or your weave as the case may be, they are more likely to notice that your nose is petite or that you have lovely smooth skin.
Short hair, in many cases, is also easier to handle. You wash it in the morning, run your fingers or afro comb through it and call it a day. And I am sure you have seen women with a buzz cut. Amber Rose is a great example of a woman who has owned the style. In fact, when I saw her with long hair, she looked a lot less attractive.
Cutting your hair and sporting it short is also a great way to build your confidence. I find that most women are worried the look won’t suit them and that they may look boyish and unappealing to the opposite sex. But this is simply not the case. Men appreciate a woman who is willing to be different and bold.
Another plus for short hair is the cost. Weaves can be very expensive; especially the ones of the Brazilian variety. We have all heard the stories of women who are late on their rent/bills because they spent their salary on hair. Even short weaves are cheaper – if you have ever bought a weave, you are aware that a ten-inch wig is much cheaper than a sixteen-inch one. But natural short hair uses less hair products, needs less salon time and you are charged less when doing it.
If you have been wondering whether or not to try something new with your hair, try a short hairstyle. If you are not ready to cut your hair just yet, wear a short wig for a while and see how you feel about it. If the compliments don’t start rolling in, I’ll eat my words. I’ll actually roll up the paper and stuff it in my mouth.
