Mrs Pinckney and The Emancipated Birds of South Carolina
From June 22 to November 12, 2017, Kensington Palace will present Mrs Pinckney and The Emancipated Birds of South Carolina, a new commission by renowned British-Nigerian sculptor Yinka Shonibare MBE, included in the Enlightened Princesses: Caroline, Augusta, Charlotte, and the Shaping of the Modern World.
This will be the second iteration of the exhibition following the first opening at Yale Center for British Art in Connecticut, United States in February.
Yinka Shonibare MBE was born in 1962 in London. He holds a bachelor degree in fine art from Byam School of Art, England and a masters of fine art degree from Goldsmiths College, England. Shonibare’s work explores issues of race and class through the media of painting, sculpture, photography and film. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, including Invasion, Escape: Aliens do it right!, Anna Schwartz Gallery, Sydney (2012); Dreaming Rich, Pearl Lam Galleries, Hong Kong, China (2013); Magic Ladders, The Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia (2014); Pièces de Résistance, DHC/ART Foundation for Contemporary Art, Montréal, Québec (2015); Rage of the Ballet Gods, James Cohan Gallery, New York (2015); End of Empire, Turner Contemporary, Margate, England (2016); …and the Wall Fell Away, Stephen Friedman Gallery, London, England (2016); and Summer Exhibition, Royal Academy, London, England (2016).
