Lionel Smit: State
From August 24 to September 27, 2017, Everard Read Johannesburg will present State, a solo exhibition by leading contemporary South African artist, Lionel Smit.
Smit’s new body of work explores the idea of the different emotional states we find ourselves in and how our surroundings influence that state of mind. Employing video in his works, Smit has created an environment where he has influenced the exhibition space, allowing him to direct the viewers’ state. This has a profound impact on how the work is experienced.
Various works explore the female figure as portrait, with the continuation of his ideas on the construction of identity with layers of paint and silkscreen fabricating the fragmentation of the subject.
Lionel Smit is renowned for his monumental portraiture works in painting, sculpture, silkscreen, video and public installations. Smit has been a featured artist for sculptural installations at the Miami Art Fair 2014 and 2016 and on the cover of Christie’s catalogue in London (2009). He has been honoured with a Ministerial Award from the South African Department of Culture for Visual Art.
