Latitudes Presents ArtistLab and CuratorLab
Latitudes.Online has recently announced its plan to launch on 31 May 2021, its mentorship programme ArtistLab and CuratorLab in collaboration with the National Arts Council of South Africa.
ArtistLab is a professional practice skills development programme for artists looking to build a career in the industry.
Presented by established arts professionals, in collaboration with Latitudes Online and independent artist Mandy Johnston, this free 5-session intensive seminar programme presents and hones key professional practice skills needed to build a strong foundation for a career in the arts. In addition, artists are developing work, under the supervision of an established artist, towards an online exhibition hosted by Latitudes.
Participating artists are Gemma Shepherd, Hannah Macfarlane, Jet Withers, Buhle Nkalashe, Lionel Mbayiwa, Luxolo Witvoet, Ntobeko Mjijwa, Tyrrel Thaysen, Cassian Robbertze and Effo Munguanzo.
Facilitators are Mandy Johnston, ArtistLab founder and independent artist; Lucy MacGarry, co-founder, Latitudes Online; Roberta Coci, co-founder, Latitudes Online; Nkgopoleng Moloi, curator, writer and photographer; Ashley Walters, visual artist; Imraan Christian, visual artist and activist; and Michaela Limberis, curator, founder of Art Meets app.
Artist Mentors are Willie Bester, Ronald Machututa and Bonolo Kavula.
Nikita Keogotsitse, inhouse curator, Latitudes Online will serve as the group show curator. The programme unfolds over the month of May, with weekly workshops and mentoring sessions taking place at the Norval Foundation that will culminate in the launch of the group show on Latitudes.Online, on 31 May.
CuratorLab is a practice-based, online curatorial residency for emerging curators in South Africa. CuratorLab takes the format of a facilitated online residency. It is designed to offer practical experience in the industry and to hone the curatorial skills of young curators. As one of the few programmes offered for curators in South Africa, it allows for participating candidates to plan and conceptualise their own show to be hosted on Latitudes Online.
The first CuratorLab boasts a varying selection of emerging curators from across the country. Our aim was to reach emerging talent from beyond the confines of the usual art hubs, as candidates in these areas can’t necessarily access this sort of programming.
The 2021 CuratorLab participants are Zannele Limambo (Mpumalanga), Bontle Tau (Free State), Motlalepula Phukubje (Western Cape) , Boitumelo Makouso (North West Province), Litemba Mpambani (Eastern Cape) , Lesole Tauatswala (Gauteng) , Jordan Cassidy (KwaZulu-Natal) , Chelsea Selvan (Gauteng) and S’nothile Gumede (Western Cape).
The project curator will be Nina Carew, inhouse curator, Latitudes Online and will feature workshops and one-on-one feedback sessions, to culminate in the launch of the curators’ projects on Latitudes.Online on 31 May.
Latitudes.Online, the online destination to explore and buy contemporary art from Africa, was designed to break down inequalities in the art world, create voices for independent artists and bring together artists and collectors.
The site was launched in July 2020, and, with over 550 artists represented on the site, it is fast on its way to becoming the largest marketplace for art from Africa.
Part of our ethos at Latitudes is to create equal opportunities for all in the art world, and we believe that mentorship and education are core to this process.
