Lagos Theatre Festival 2019: Imagine the Unimaginable
From April 8 to 14, 2019, Lagos will play host to over 600 artists to present 140 performances at 20 Venues across the city such as the Freedom Park – (the main hub of the festival), British Council, MUSON Centre, Terra Kulture Arena and Bariga Market. Themed Imagine the Unimaginable, the 2019 edition of the Lagos Theatre Festival will include curated and fringe strands—an open-access festival for all genres in the performing arts (small theatre, children’s theatre, dance, film, spoken word, comedy, puppetry, cabaret, music and interdisciplinary arts) designed to allow performers/companies not participating in the curated festival an opportunity to present work for viewing.
“This year’s programme is designed to ensure that the festival offers unforgettable experiences to everyone that will be attending”, the festival director, Sola Oyebade proclaimed. “Despite having moved the dates due to the elections, we are all excited in anticipation of the outcome of this year’s edition.”
The festival was conceived and launched in 2013 by the United Kingdom’s cultural organisation, British Council in response to their inspiration to provide a platform for theatre-makers in Nigeria, to develop audiences for theatre productions and to produce theatre works in unconventional spaces.
The 5th Lagos edition took place in February 2018 across Lagos featuring over 110 events, with remarkable audience attendance of workshops and shows at the various venues during the 6 day period of the festival.
