El Anatsui: Triumphant Scale
From March 8 to July 28, 2019, Haus der Kunst will present Triumphant Scale, an exhibition by Ghanaian artist El Anatsu focusing on the triumphant and monumental quality of El Anatsui’s sculptures, with the signature bottle-cap series developed over the last two decades situated at the core of the presentation. Along with these ambitious works, with their imposing physical presence and dazzling colours, the exhibition will also include wood sculptures and wall reliefs spanning the mid-1970s to the late 1990s; ceramic sculptures of the late 1970s; as well as drawings, prints, and books.
Okwui Enwezor who resigned as the Artistic Director of Haus der Kunst last June will co-curate alongside the art historian Chika Okeke-Agulu, the largest survey ever of El Anatsui’s work including several of his signature bottle-cap sculptures. The show is due to tour to Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha in the autumn.
The exhibition is funded by the Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne and supported by Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, Kavita Chellaram and Reni Folawiyo.
