Constellations- Floating Space, Motion and Remembrance
Iwalewahaus presents Constellations- Floating Space, Motion and Remembrance as a part of its summer exhibitions by Nigerian artist Ndidi Dike, which is currently ongoing till September 17, 2017.
Dikes’s first solo exhibition in Europe reflects a critical examination of migration policy, consumerism, trans-nationalism and globalisation. Migration and the moment of transit are considered by the artist from an approaching perspective. Themes such as resettlement and integration play a role, but also the possibility of understanding, tolerance or even acceptance of cultural practices that are new to us.
Dike refers both to historical events such as the transatlantic slave trade between the 16th and 19th centuries – one of the greatest examples of forced and violent migration in the history of mankind – as well as to current world political events. It places the focus on the act of movement in space and time. The installations thus transport the complex interrelations of migration and recount economic and political realities, tragic moments and lived experience of transit.
Ndidi Dike was born in London and holds a diploma in music education, as well as a bachelor of arts degree in fine and applied arts from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Dike is stimulated by Nigerian visual culture, urbanism, globalisation, consumerism, post-colonial studies, slavery, cross border/country migration, multi culturism, art history, and contemporary politics. She has featured in several exhibitions in Africa and internationally, including Seven Stories about Modern Art in Africa, Whitechapel Gallery, London (1995); Women to Women, Weaving Cultures, Shaping History, University Art Gallery, Indiana State University (2000); Totems and Signpost, Goethe Institute, Lagos (2002); Waka-into Bondage, The Last Mile, CCA, Lagos (2008); Hacking Conflict Indonesia meets Nigeria, Biennale Jogja XIII, (2015); and Unknown Pleasures and Competing Tendencies, National Museum, Onikan, Lagos (2016).
