You could call it a love affair if you wish but there’s an amazing feeling about reading a good book and not forgetting it. Like Dr Seuss says “the more one reads, the more things one would know”. For bibliophiles, it may be a bit difficult finding original and good books in Lagos. This is partly due to this digital era where traditional bookstores are gradually being phased out, leaving a few scattered across the metropolis. Here are a few of the most unique.

Terra Kulture

Established in 2004, Terra Kulture is a beautifully designed cultural centre that features an art gallery, a restaurant that offers delightful Nigerian cuisine, an event space, study room and a bookshop, which prides itself on promoting various categories of literature by Nigerian authors. Open from 9am till 10pm every day, the centre also hosts book readings and classes in Nigerian languages. Terra Kulture is located at Plot 1376, Tiamiyu Savage Street, Victoria Island.


CSS Bookshop

Established in 1896, CSS Bookshop is recognised as the oldest bookstore in Lagos. Located on Broad Street, it offers an eclectic range of academic books, classics, educational textbooks, contemporary fiction, magazines and children’s books.


The Hub

The Hub is regularly listed as one of Lagos’ essential bookstores. This is because it has become so deeply woven into the fabric of the city that it is mentioned as one of the must-visit places. Patabah Books Limited

Patabah Books Limited was set up in 1987 to cater to the needs of book lovers. Over time, the store has become a one-stop shop for everything from books to gift items. Situated on Adeniran Ogunsanya Street in Surulere, Patabah Books’ mission is to nurture creativity, and encourage a thirst for knowledge. Patabah Books is open on Mondays through Saturdays, from 9am.


Debonair Bookstore

Founded in 2005 by Adebola Omololu, Debonair is recognised as Nigeria’s first online bookstore. A specialist academic and hard-to-find book title provider, Debonair has since expanded into a multi-channel brick and mortar store called experience centres. Today it holds over two million titles on business, leadership, fiction, comics, architecture, food, pets, as well as Bibles. The Reading Corner

The Reading Corner is an online bookstore dedicated to the sale of children’s reading materials. With a wonderful collection of fiction, non-fiction, motivational and educational books for children between the ages of 0-14, the major aim of the Reading Corner is to promote a reading culture among Nigerian children, as well as promote young authors and publishers.
