World Press Photo nominates Saater, Gambo, Aken and Omoboriowo for Masterclass
The World Press Foundation has announced the nominees for the 2017 Joop Swart Masterclass. The list consists of 187 nominees with 26 Africans making the list. Of this number, 4 are emerging Nigerian photographers Tom Saater, Rahima Gambo, Jenevieve Aken and Bayo Omoboriowo.
The World Press Photo Foundation is committed to the development and promotion of visual journalism through training schemes around the world, like its Joop Swart Masterclass. Organised by 65 nationalities every year since 1994, it is one of the most prestigious events of its kind and aims to bring together some of the most experienced individuals in photojournalism with young, promising photographers, to share and pass on their knowledge and experience.
The other African photographers nominated for this year’s edition are Mohamed Abdiwahab (Somalia), Hilina Abebe (Ethiopia), Shayma Ahmed (Sudan), Roger Enis (Egypt), Mohammed Elshamy (Egypt), Hicham Gardaf (Morroco), Eric Gyamfi (Ghana), Maheder Haileselassie Tadese (Ethiopia), Stefan Heunis (South Africa), Brian.E Inganga (Kenya), Heba Khamis (Egypt), Youcef Krache (Algeria), Alice Mann (South Africa), Mehdy Mariouch (Morocco), Tshepiso Mazibuko (South Africa), Esther Mbabazi (Uganda), Sinawi Zen Medicine (Eritrea), Lazare Mohamed France (Algeria), Nobukho Nqaba (South Africa), Brian Otieno (Kenya), Sara Sallam (Egypt), Lindokuhle Sobekwa (South Africa) and John Weiss (Germany)
In the next stage, an independent committee will choose the final 12 to be invited to Amsterdam for the master class later this year. The selected participants will be announced during the World Press Photo Festival, taking place in Amsterdam from April 20-22, 2017.
