Design Is The Personality Of An Idea
by Ladun Ogidan
“We are all deluded. In the most dangerous ways, the most beautiful ways and the most banal and benign ways, we all exist in a world of our own design, our own creation, our own filter. Built with our beliefs, our histories, our traumas, our consumption, our interactions, our societies, our habits, our opportunities and dreams, we design our own reality.”
From July 19 to August 3, 2015, The Female Artists’ development projects will present Design is the Personality of an Idea, a group exhibition at the Ford Foundation in Lagos. The exhibition will explore works in diverse media including photography, digital collage, film, fashion, paint, and sound.
Design is the Personality of an Idea comes 5 years after the African Artists’ Foundation (AAF) organized the first workshop and exhibition of the Female Artists’ development projects organized to promote a more gender equal creative industry.
Here, the artists depict the diversity and complexity of each of our worldviews: complete, distinct, nuanced and fantastical. They design and manifest their own distinct realities with the intention of leaving the audience with no one thing to say about them.
Featured artists are Joana Choumali (Côte d’Ivoire), Nkechi Ebubedike (Nigeria and America), Selly Raby Kanwho (Senegal), Akwaeke Emezi (Nigeria), Modupeola Fadugba (Nigeria), Moonchild Sanelly (South Africa), Nkiru Oparah (Nigeria), and The Venus Bushfires (Nigeria).
