Past winners of the awards include films such as Abeni, Otelo Burning, The Figurine, How to Steal 2 Million, The Amazing Grace and Across the Niger.

Individual winners include Lancelot Imasuen, Teco Benson, Tunde Kelani, Kunle Afolayan, Leila Djansi and Shirley Frimpong-Manso.

The Africa Movie Academy Awards is an offshoot of the Africa Film Academy. Established in 2005, it aims to facilitate the development and relevance of African film and cinema by providing a rewards and recognition platform for filmmakers on the continent. With poor funding, African filmmakers through determination managed to build the 3rd largest film industry in the world after United States and India.
